As part of the EU project “The Routes of Frankopans", cultural-tourist route, the Natural History Museum Rijeka decided to equip the permanent exhibition "Wildlife with Sea View" and the interpretation center " “The Routes of Frankopans, Brod na Kupi" in Zrinski castle with multimedia equipment setup. Both exhibitions are an exceptional tourist attraction in the castle, which dates from the 17th century, and is located in the country border area, at the entrance to Croatia from the Slovenian side.
The cultural and tourist route "Putovi Frankopana" is inspired by the legacy of the famous Croatian family Frankopan, which from the beginning of the 12th to the second half of the 17th century in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County left numerous traces of their influence and power. The County of Primorje-Gorski Kotar launched the project in 2005 with the aim of restoring, preserving, protecting and sustainable use of tangible and intangible heritage.
In order to emphasize the preservation and valorization of the heritage of the Frankopan family and the value of the natural heritage of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the Natural History Museum Rijeka decided to equip the permanent exhibition and interpretation center Brod na Kupi with multimedia equipment setup.
The main challenge was to design the concept and layout of the PandoPad solutions that will allow visitors to experience the uniqueness of cultural and natural heritage in a completely new way with the use of the latest technologies.
It is necessary to define the detailed appearance and functionality of the multimedia system on the basis of the approved concept and to specify the necessary equipment. The new permanent exhibition and interpretation center would present the content in a modern way through the exhibits themselves, but also through multimedia content and various visual and audio effects.
Multimedia lighting effects equipment using smart lighting control system, touch screens, computers and monitors, electronic pocket magnifiers, projector system with interactive installation on kinetic screen (motion sensor), conference projector system, audio systems, ambient lighting, multimedia control tablets.
Each floor of castle has a different thematic unit that represents one altitude layer of the mountain in Gorski kotar.
The ground floor shows the historical and cultural significance of Gorski Kotar and Kupa Valley, the first floor represents the forest, the second floor the mountain above the forest borders, while the third floor provides space for temporary exhibitions, interactive installations, various events and relax zone for visitors. Most of the ground floor and the third floor form the Brod na Kupi interpretation center, while the second and largest part of the third floor form a permanent exhibition.
The new permanent exhibition will show the natural heritage of the Kupa Valley and Gorski Kotar in an attractive way and using the most modern approaches and technologies, from the mountain forests and their inhabitants to the highest peaks of mountains. The exhibition teaches visitors about living conditions in different habitats, rare and endangered species, but also about the traditional coexistence of man and nature in this area.
The project of the interpretation center creates a foundation for multimedia contents in order to interpret individual exhibits or themes, interactive lighting of the exhibits as well as ambient sound background and ceiling ambient projections.
Lighting, sound and ambient projections form a functional unit for each floor, and on the ground floor of the interpretation center, they differ in the situation of "day" and "night". Lighting can also be controlled via tablet application where users can change color or brightness.
It is possible to activate sounds above individual showcases, regardless of the ambient sound background, so that visitors can be introduced to the roars of individual animal species.
The new multimedia equipment not only preserves the valuable historical heritage, but also breathes new life into it, tells the story of those times, creates a new tourist offer, and preserves it for future generations and tourists.
