The Maritime and Historical Museum of the Croatian Littoral has been one of the most important cultural sights in the City of Rijeka for four decades. With its permanent exhibition and many valuable exhibitions from its own or the holdings of other Croatian museums, it is involved in marking important events related to the history and culture of Rijeka, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and Croatia. The museum is placed in the former Governor's Palace, which is a protected cultural monument and is a place where numerous non-museum activities are held, such as concerts, events, etc.
In addition to the permanent ethnographic exhibition on the ground floor, the first floor of the Governor's Palace presents a cultural-historical exhibition called Through the window of the Governor’s Palace, which reflect the former life in the palace. As the exhibition stretches through the representative salons of the first floor of the palace, the museum has decided to equip itself with interactive kiosks and applications that encourage visitors to explore the rich cultural heritage and former life.
In order to show visitors the cultural heritage in a modern way, the Maritime and Historical Museum of the Croatian Littoral Rijeka has decided to set up interactive kiosks in the museum lobby and in individual salons / halls.
The main challenge was to design the concept and content of our PandoPad solutions for each room which would educate museum visitors and provide useful information about cultural heritage in a multimedia format.
The solution needed to be equipped with a package of centrally managed multimedia applications and in the creative part of the project it was necessary to develop visual content and design user interfaces. Since each room told a different story, it was necessary to digitally display the museum exhibit and allow content management from one place.
One PandoPad ® TOTEM 32 ”unit was delivered, placed in the lobby of the museum, which represents the cultural heritage with multimedia applications. Interactive units describing the exhibits and the contents of the exhibits were also supplied for each room of the palace. The screens are of the most modern technologies, high brightness, and due to their characteristics they dominate the space. Finally, a PandoPad® Manager system as a central place to manage all content and a large package of PandoPad® Applications specially designed for the contents of each room were delivered.
The exhibition "Through the Window of the Governor's Palace" shows the turbulent political history of Rijeka from the founding of the Rijeka Gubernium in the late 18th century to the mid-20th century. With the help of exhibited museum objects and various touch applications, visitors can find out when and why the Gubernium was founded, who the governors of Rijeka were, what was the relationship between Rijeka and the Habsburgs and how Rijeka was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
Interactive content is designed through our PandoPad® Manager content management system which is easily accessed via a web browser. It allows visitors to turn on or off the display of individual PandoPad applications, manage their multilingual content, images, photos, videos, display schedule, etc.
The Red Salon was the governor's study, which he could reach by a private staircase from his second-floor apartment. During the great renovation of the palace in 1938, carried out by the administration of the Italian Kvarner province, the governor's study was converted into a smoking salon. The walls were covered with red silk wallpaper, hence the name Red Salon. Today, portraits of the governors of Rijeka and the original furniture of the Governor's Palace are on display in the Red Salon, among which the Governor's desk stands out.
The Green Salon was a room for governor's meetings. The name of the Green Salon room was given after the renovation during the Italian administration in 1938, when, together with other rooms on the first floor of the eastern part of the Palace, it was decorated as a representative space. The existing red wallpaper was removed and green silk was installed. Today, the Green Salon is part of a permanent museum exhibition in which the political history of Rijeka from the 18th to the 20th century (Rijeka Gubernium) is presented.
The PandoPad® Gallery application served as a unique guide for visitors through which it is possible to easily map various objects of a museum room into an interactive album. This way, visitors can find out more information about the items while exploring the rooms.
In this example we see the PandoPad® eCard Selfie application through which users can select one of the offered images, insert a photo of their face and send a virtual / digital postcard using the integrated e-mail system.
